Arthur Carlton was born in 1919 (Newmarket Q1-1919 3B:580), son of Ernest William and Florence Hannah CARLTON (née CROSS ).
His uncle Bert Carlton was killed in France in 1916 see here In the 1939 register his parents were at Mill Corner Cottages, Stetchworth. Father [3-6-1885] was an agricultural engine driver and a member of the Auxiliary Fire Service,mother [4-4-1882]. There are no closed records. |

Captured as Singapore fell to the Japanese, he died on the infamous Thailand-Burma Railway, just days after its completion. Of the nearly 62,000 Allied prisoner who were forced to work on it, about 1 in 5 died. In addition an estimated 180,000 civilians were made slaves and put to work and of them around half did not survive. Arthur died from dysentery at Non Pladuk, the southern end of the railway, and originally buried there. He, along with the others, was moved to Chungkai in April 1946. |
