Captured as Singapore fell to the Japanese, he died on the infamous Thailand-Burma Railway, just days after its completion. Of the nearly 62,000 Allied prisoner who were forced to work on it, about 1 in 5 died. In addition an estimated 180,000 civilians were made slaves and put to work and of them around half did not survive.

Arthur died from dysentery at Non Pladuk, the southern end of the railway, and originally buried there. He, along with the others, was moved to Chungkai in April 1946.
